Higher-Potency Synthetic Opioids Are Everywhere
The opioid landscape has changed, and the threats keep evolving. With people of all ages experiencing addiction and overdose, it’s never been more important to recognize the dangers and know the facts around higher-potency synthetic opioids. Synthetic opioid use is on the rise.
Overdoses involving synthetic opioids and other drugs are rising at an alarming rate. In recent years, synthetic opioids were involved in:5
- 71% of cocaine-related deaths
- 65% of benzodiazepine-related deaths
- 49% of stimulant-related deaths
- 43% of antidepressant-related deaths
Counterfeit pills are a concern.
In addition to being combined with substances such as cocaine, higher-potency synthetic opioids can be pressed into counterfeit pills.3,4,6 These fakes may look exactly like “real” prescription drugs but many contain a deadly dose of a synthetic opioid.3,4,6 Recent tests performed by US Drug Enforcement Administration labs found that 7 out of every 10 pills seized by the agency were potentially lethal.6
Stronger opioids need a stronger response.
In an overdose involving a higher-potency synthetic opioid, a standard 4-mg dose of naloxone may not be enough.2 Two, three or even more doses of naloxone often are needed in these situations. And these situations are not rare—quite the opposite, in fact.2 A recent study found that 78% of opioid overdose reversals involve at least 8 mg of naloxone.2

REMOVE Kloxxado® nasal spray from the box. Peel off the back tab with the triangle to open the Kloxxado® nasal spray blister.
HOLD
HOLD it with your thumb on the bottom and your first and middle fingers on either side of the nozzle.
INSERT
INSERT the tip of the nozzle into one nostril until your fingers are against the bottom of the person’s nose.
PRESS
PRESS the plunger firmly to give the dose of Kloxxado® nasal spray.
