This past June, Hikma Pharmaceuticals reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to naloxone while participating with the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in a White House conversation on opioid reversal agents. Through its Hikma Community Health Initiative, the company is partnering with other organizations on the frontlines of the opioid overdose crisis to help expand access to naloxone nationwide. Hikma has donated more than 450,000 doses of Kloxxado® and injectable naloxone to harm reduction groups, community organizations and others across the US. With the increasing prevalence of illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids, organizations including the CDC, the AMA and others have noted that a higher dose of naloxone may be required to revive a patient experiencing poisoning from Illicit fentanyl or other opioids. This past August, Georgia state representative Earl L. “Buddy” Carter hosted a naloxone training event at Groves High School in Georgia’s First Congressional District. Attended by businesses and citizens alike, Rep Carter detailed the importance of carrying naloxone and how it can be used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, even those involving fentanyl. In an interview with WTOC Channel 11, Carter said, “If you can reverse those effects, even temporarily, it can save lives.”

Times Square Event Marks National Fentanyl Prevention Day7

Andrea Thomas founded the nonprofit Facing Fentanyl after the tragic loss of her daughter, Ashley Romero, to accidental fentanyl poisoning. The organization took over Times Square on August 21 to mark the third annual National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day. A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a Facing Fentanyl billboard, which lit up Times Square for 20 minutes and featured images of people lost to fentanyl. In addition to this tribute, Facing Fentanyl members distributed naloxone at the event, talked with passersby and answered questions. Also in attendance were James Carroll, former Director of the White House ONDCP; Michael Fiore, a recovery advocate; Jaime Puerta, head of Victims of Illicit Drugs (VOID) and Frank Tarentino, the Special Agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division.

In September, thousands of music fans came to Asbury Park, New Jersey to attend the Sea.Hear.Now. music festival. Highlights included a homecoming performance from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, as well as many other well-known musical acts. Among the crowds were husband-and-wife team William Perry and Ingela Travers-Hayward from the Ohio-based non-profit, This Must Be the Place.
